Going through an elimination diet encouraged me to All About Rice Tea. Some research found that there is a Korean drink called Hyeonmi cha made from roasted rice steeped in boiling water. It's simple and cheap to make, and astonishingly delicious.

Inspired by this recipe by Lai Hon Leong.

Ingredients

  • Brown rice
  • Boiling water

Directions

  1. Put the rice in a dry fry pan (no oil), make sure you stir it regularly or it will burn.
  2. Fry until nicely browned and has a nutty smell. Don't worry if some of the rice pops!
  3. When the rice is done put a teaspoon of it in a cup.
  4. Pour in boiling water and let steep for up to 10 minutes.

Notes

  • Traditionally you use short grain rice to make Hyeonmi cha but it will work with any type of brown rice (but don't use white rice!). Experiment to see how they taste different.
  • You can use already boiled rice, not need to cook it first but it might be a nice thing to do with a small amount of leftover rice.
  • You can drink it hot or cold.
  • You can sweeten it with honey.
